Richard McNally had the honour of playing Grandmaster John Nunn (ECF grade 253!) in the opening round of this year's Witney Chess Congress held on the weekend of 22nd/23rd October. This was the first time that Richard had played a Grandmaster.

John Nunn became a Grandmaster in 1978 and British Champion in 1980. He has twice won individual gold medals at Chess Olympiads.

Things didn't quite go Richard's way but John Nunn did go on to win the tournament outright.
