2005 Summer Newsletter

Tournaments
  5th August 2005

I thought that it was time to provide all members with an update of what has been happening during the Summer and what is scheduled for the near future and to remind everyone that we are now only four weeks away from the start of the competitive season!

  The Summer so far

Colin Searle provided a most stimulating and entertaining coaching evening on 26th May although regrettably it was only attended by about half a dozen members.

David Bowie and Phil Askew organised the Summer Tournament which is still running. 8 members are participating. There have been two groups of 4 and the all-play-all games within these groups are now finished. The semi-finals are about to be played with David Bowie and Phil Bennett contesting one and Andy Chowne and myself the other.

There have been ongoing difficulties with access to the club cupboard and I have had a meeting with the hotel management. It has however been difficult to press our case when on most Thursdays there have been few if any members attending. I think we must give serious thought next year as to whether to keep the club running during the Summer months.

Can I remind all members that the code for the club cupboard is XXXX (You should know - Carl). Every member needs to know this and be prepared to open up and start setting up if they arrive first at the club on an evening. Too many members assume that this is someone else’s job.

Following our discussion at the AGM about ways of trying to boost club membership I have produced some posters and flyers advertising the club. We need to try and put these up wherever we are allowed within the Stratford area. I would greatly appreciate the help of those of you who live in Stratford and know the town as I do not really know where to start.

  Thursday 25th August

Colin Searle will be holding another coaching session, probably with the help of Richard McNally. The focus this time will be on openings. I would urge all members to try and come to this
(Colin & Richard on openings should be "interesting" - Carl)

  Thursday 1st September

As previously billed in my May letter. a semi social, semi chess evening is being organised to engender a good club spirit and warm up people’s chess skills ahead of the Winter Season. There will be wine and a buffet to be consumed while playing in a form of knockout competition consisting of rapidplay games played with 15 minutes on the clock. The main aim will be to have fun.
We need to know the approximate number of people who will be coming in order to get the catering right. Could all those members who have not put their name down on the club board during the summer please contact
  Dave Bowie (tel:- 01789 295184) email:- dave.bowie@btopenworld.com

  Saturday 3rd September

This is the day chosen for the club to play chess against all comers in Stratford town centre. This will run from about 11am to 3pm. It is important that we have the full support of the club for this event and I would be grateful if members could contact me to confirm that they will be able to attend for at least some of the day. We will hand out more of the flyers during the day.

  Sunday 11th September

This is the date of the 19th Annual League Rapidplay at the Leamington Spa Centre. This is always a good event which local players should be supporting. I am the congress director and anyone wanting to play in this should contact me for an entry form.

  2005/6 Grades, Teams & Fixtures

The new grading list is now available on the Internet thanks to Carl Hibbard and can be accessed via the club website (www.stratfordchess.com). There are no major surprises and the teams look likely to line up as outlined in the AGM minutes I sent you in May. On the basis of the grades, Cyril Denney has agreed to captain the C team with David Bowie completing the B team line up. Members’ grades and teams are included in the contact details at the end of this letter.

The probable fixture list for the coming season is now published on the league website (www.leamingtonchessleague.org.uk). On the basis of this, the first A team match is on 7th September, the first C team match is on 12th September and the first B team match is on 15th September.

In summary, there is plenty going on at the club and plenty coming up. It is important for the club that we have a good playing season with commitment being shown by all members and that the club is well attended on every Thursday throughout the Winter. It would be great to see good turn outs on both 25th August and 1st September thus getting the new season off to a flying start.

Kind regards

Jonathan Rashleigh
Chairman & Secretary
